FAQ

Where does the data come from?

All crash data comes from the NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), a publicly available dataset maintained by the U.S. Department of Transportation. It covers fatal motor vehicle crashes from 2001 through 2023.

Why don't I see any crashes near me?

FARS only includes crashes that occurred on U.S. public roads and resulted in at least one fatality within 30 days. If you're outside the U.S. or in a very low-traffic area, there may be few or no results nearby. Try zooming out or expanding the year range.

Why does the app need my location?

Your location is used only to center the map. It is never stored or sent to any server. You can deny location access and pan the map manually.

How current is the data?

FARS data is released annually by NHTSA, typically with a 1–2 year lag. The app currently includes data through 2023.
